Unique skull-base surgical resource features strategic, technical, and philosophical pearls from master surgeonsIn a sense, surgeons go into battle every time they enter the OR. Like soldiers, they must be prepared to make profound sacrifices to protect innocent people (their patients), while putting egos aside and resisting the call of fame. Skull Base Surgery: Strategies by Walter Jean and distinguished contributors provides eloquent expression to the inner voices that speak to surgeons during each stage of battle. Unlike other textbooks that only emphasize the technical building blocks surgeons need, this resource focuses on state-of-the-art skull-base procedures, important thought processes, and vital strategies required to perform them.Size and shape variations, diverse biological characteristics, different anatomic locations and extensions, and specific relationships and entanglements with nerves and vessels make all skull base tumors unique and highly challenging. In addition to anatomy, two other important factors need to be considered every time a surgeon enters the OR - the particular circumstances of the patient and surgeon. Throughout this remarkable book, master neurosurgeons take readers on an insightful journey exploring the decision-making process of choosing and executing a surgical approach, with firsthand pearls from the battlefield.Key HighlightsNine sections organized by anatomy cover tumors in the anterior, anterolateral, lateral, central, postero-superior, and postero-inferior skull base regions, and clivus, petrous bone, and ventriclesThirty-two systematically organized chapters flow from clinical presentation and radiographic/anatomical findings of specific patients and tumors - to decision-making and execution of the surgical approachReal-life cases enhance understanding of all the elements that go into each operationPerspectives sections at the end of each chapter embrace the concept of diverse surgeon viewpoints on similar ideas, techniques, and approachesThis exemplary book is essential reading for neurosurgery and otolaryngology residents, fellows, veteran practitioners, and allied health personnel who care for patients with skull base tumors. This book includes complimentary access to a digital copy on https://medone.thieme.com.

Head and Neck Cancer Recurrence

Over the past 5 to 10 years, organ preservation techniques using chemoradiotherapy have gained considerable popularity as first-line treatment of head and neck cancer, especially for oropharyngeal, laryngeal, and hypopharyngeal cancer. This trend is now increasing with more intensified chemoradiotherapy treatment modalities and regimens. This means that more and more advanced disease is likely to be treated with chemoradiotherapy as a primary treatment, with increased likelihood of failure of these treatments (almost half of the patients relapse, but the organ-preserving aspect of chemoradiotherapy makes it in many cases so very worthwhile as a primary treatment). As chemoradiotherapy is a relatively new management philosophy, experience of salvaging patients with recurrences is therefore still relatively limited and expertise of it is not yet highly developed, although it is an area of great interest for the wider specialties involved. This book is specifically compiled to provide evidence-based, multidisciplinary management strategies for this complex and difficult to manage disease, combined with an account of the relevant techniques, results, and possible complications that might arise and how to deal with them. The book is intended for practicing specialists in head and neck cancer both surgery and oncology. It is aimed at the consultant level as well as at senior trainees interested in the field. Special features: - Evidence-based, comprehensive review of the topic, which is very difficult to deal with in clinical practice and poorly covered in the literature - International, multidisciplinary authorship including the top clinicians in their fields, most chapters have a surgeon and an oncologist involved, which offers top expertise and a balanced, multidisciplinary view - General chapters on principles of relevant surgical techniques and radiotherapy, site-specific chapters dealing with specific management of recurrence at each head and neck site - Pactical tips and pitfalls sections the practical details will allow readers to improve patient management and outcomes - Illustrative cases including history, clinical findings, imaging, treatment (incl. Plplanning and results) brings decision-making process to life and easier to relate to clinical practice - Summaries, recommended further reading and further research sections highlight important aspects, offer a valuable reference facility, and point out specific needs for further systematic studies Target groups: head and neck surgeons (with a background in otolaryngology, maxillofacial surgery, or platisc surgery), head and neck radiation and medical oncologists
