This book clarifies the meaning of the most important and pervasive concepts and tools in bioethical argumentation (principles, values, dignity, rights, duties, deliberation, prudence) and assesses the methodological suitability of the main methods for clinical decision-making and argumentation. The first part of the book is devoted to the most developed or promising approaches regarding bioethical argumentation, namely those based on principles, values and human rights. The authors then continue to deal with the contributions and shortcomings of these approaches and suggest further developments by means of substantive and procedural elements and concepts from practical philosophy, normative systems theory, theory of action, human rights and legal argumentation. Furthermore, new models of biomedical and health care decision-making, which overcome the aforementioned criticism and stress the relevance of the argumentative responsibility, are included.

The concept of Human Dignity has been discussed focussing on the Kantian and Islamic philosophy. The idea of personhood and sanctity of life has been elaborated considering Islamic and Kantian philosophical ideas. I tried to focus on the Bioethical issues of consent and autonomy with emphasis on Islamic principals. Reproductive techniques, organ donation, gene therapy, contraception, abortion, euthanasia and post-mortem and other issues have been discussed in light of Quran and Hadith. Pakistan Medical and Dental Council's codes of ethics have been analyzed and critically evaluated in the light of international and Islamic Bioethical laws. Pakistan has no bioethical regulations that can support the codes of ethics. Medical decision making has been evaluated with examples. There is a wide gap between theory and practice, medical codes of ethics are not been followed in clinical and research medicine in Pakistan.

Issues in Bioethics and the Concept of Scale
64,95 € *

Issues in Bioethics and the Concept of Scale arose from the author's deep and committed interest in ecology, moral philosophy, and medicine, and how they are interrelated. William A. Cook expands on the recognition that spatial and temporal scale characteristics are factors in the understanding and modeling of ecological systems and in decision-making around ecological and environmental issues, and introduces this dynamic to the field of bioethics. The concept of scale, from hierarchy theory as it is used in ecology to deal with the complexity and interrelationships of systems, is explored and identified as a factor and potential source of conflict in the field of bioethics. This notion of scale is conceptually useful for considering the complexity of some bioethical issues.

Blurb The doctor-patient relationship in Egypt is characterized by miscommunication and dissatisfaction. Such relationship matters especially when dealing with chronic and life-threatening illnesses that require longer duration of dealing with doctors. Doctor-shopping is prevailing in Egypt due to the lack of trust in doctors. This book examines four main bioethical concerns elicited within the doctor-patient relationship: equal allocation of resources, disclosure of diagnosis, decision-making, and informed consent, to look closely at the interplay of factors determining such relationship within the context of cancer care in Egypt. The book aims at pinpointing the factors that may help improve the doctor-patient relationship with patients with breast cancer in particular. The book deals with the doctor-patient relationship from a holistic biopsychosocial approach.

Moral Reasoning - the Important Role of Individ...

Revision with unchanged content. Today, bioethical dilemmata are relevant for doctors as well as for managers - and everybody who is interested in descision making processes. This book describes a cross-cultural research project on different versions of the trolley dilemma explored in Germany and India. Within the study, subjects had the hypothetical choice to re-direct an out-of-control train and kill one person in order to save five persons' lives, or to refrain from acting, which would lead to the death of these five people. This book examines if people from India follow the guidelines of consequentialism in contrasat to Germans. Furthermore, it shows that the status of a person is an important factor in the process of moral decision making in India, but not in Germany. The methods and results integrate two distinctive perspectives into moral reasoning. In contrast to approaches underlining a universal morality these findings provide evidence for inter-cultural differences concerning moral decisions based on perception. Besides that even a social psychological approach that integrates different dimensions of moral reasoning will be discussed. Thus this book is dedicated to every decision maker.
